Color Crush Living Room Makeover with Crate and Barrel

Suddenly it’s springtime in Portland and all I want is to fill my home with vibrancy!

Neutrals will always have a place in my heart, but to be honest, right now I’m seriously color crushing.

As always, I have you covered. I’m here to offer some quick, easy ways to bring color in seamlessly without breaking the bank. The ultimate trick is utilizing colorful pieces you already own (or can source for a good price!) against the backdrop of beautiful neutral elements and pieces you’re willing to invest in for a lifetime.

Start with a Clean Slate

First things first, let’s not forget that color works best when it doesn’t overwhelm the room, so start with a grounding piece or two in a neutral tone (like I said, always in my heart). A clean, fresh pop of white is the perfect base for building your color onto, so a white, modern-looking couch is a great place to begin. Same goes for a rug—I say spring for a bright white rug like this Gabor Ivory Hand Woven Rug. Or if you’re worried about spills, opt for a sturdier (easier to clean!), more forgiving area rug like this this Keeler Parchment Jute Rug.

These two pieces will allow the color you bring in through pillows, prints, vases, throws, books and other colorful komono (as Marie Kondo would say—basically all the small objects around the house!) to really stand out. This Moyano Blue Patterned Pillow with Down-Alternative Insert 16″ is a gorgeous addition to literally any couch or chair, and on that note, the  Grayson Tufted Swivel Chair is the perfect colorful accompaniment to your neutral couch and rug.

Invest in Multi-Purpose Pieces

Aim to make your space warm and personal, but no need to fill the room with clutter. As I’ve said, the key is finding a few favorite pieces—and are willing to invest in!—and then carefully inhabiting them with items you love that bring in both color and pattern. I love this Tate Bookcase Bar as both a beautiful and functional piece for displaying small treasures like candles, plants and books—but the best part is the built-in storage for all your fave cocktail ingredients. Pop open the shelf for a party and serve drinks right there for your guests. This Vance Collection of glassware is the perfect modern, sleek addition to your space.

Display with Intention

A coffee table is a great piece for featuring existing items you already own that play into your color crush, like a vase (this Annisa Light Blue Short Teardrop Vase is lovely with or without flowers!), a candle, or a stack of books with vibrant spines. This Madura Woven Outdoor Coffee Table is an ideal addition to any room, especially because it’s lightweight and made for outdoors, and can easily be pulled outside for your next outdoor party. In or out, it looks stunning with this Element Metal Antiqued Brass Tray for displaying a handful of your favorite color-popping things.
