Escape to Albuquerque, New Mexico! | Foodie’s Weekend Escape Part I

Visiting Albuquerque, New Mexico was an incredible experience.

I can’t believe it took me this long to make it to the Southwest! I’d just never been – as is with many places in the states. There’s so much to discover – so exciting!

Albuquerque was full of surprises and little gems. From an unexpected hip food market made out of storage containers to experiencing an unforgettable air balloon ride at sunrise. It was certainly a weekend to remember. My direct flight from PDX to ABQ with Alaska Airlines was as convenient as ever. Truly enjoyed my travel experience to and from this vibrant city.

Below I’ve shared 5 of my top favorites. I hope you enjoy this sneak peek! In case you missed it, make sure to check out Part II – Detroit, and Part III – New York City.

Lunch: Rockin’ Taco

One of my first stops in Albuquerque was at Rockin’ Taco. It was a perfect start to my foodie weekend! Found it at Green Jeans Farmery; ABQ’s version of a food market with a hip- vibe as all shops have been built out with storage containers. It’s a great place to visit as there’s several options available from the city’s best.

On the menu: Seafood trio! Ordered mahi, lobster and shrimp tacos.

Main Lobster taco was a total win- served w/ lemon butter, white bean hummus, lettuce and jicama slaw.

Brunch: The Grove

By now you know that every Foodie Weekend Escape must include the perfect brunch. When I was at the farmer’s market, I asked the locals what they’re recommend. Several said hands down, the best brunch in ABQ was The Grove! I was thrilled to hear that the cafe works with dozens of organic, local farmers and artisans to source the highest quality, in season ingredients. Just the way I like it ; ).

On the menu:

Croque Madame Sandwich: black forest ham, tomato, whole grain mustard, gruyere cheese, sunny side up egg, served on a rustic loaf slice with a side of kale salad.

The Grove Pancakes: prepared french style – a mix between a pancake and crepe! Served with fresh fruit, creme fraiche, local honey, real maple syrup and a locally recommended “must add on” – local bacon.

The Kombucha Project – Hibiscus kombucha + house mimosa made with in house pressed orange juice and citrus kombucha.

Coffee was delicious, featuring Intelligentsia Roasters – one of my personal favorites. The cafe also has a wonderful selection of curated goods, including some of my favorite purveyors from Portland!

Taste: Casa Rondeña Winery

Had to check out the wine scene in ABQ that I learned has been vibrantly growing for over 400 years. Went to Casa Rondeña – a stunning property to take it all in. Was an absolute treat to taste their award winning wines. Loved walking the grounds and seeing all they have to offer. Definitely worth a visit!

Adventure: Hot Air Balloon Ride

Did you know that Albuquerque is the ballooning capital of the world? I knew I had to take a hot air balloon ride! Decided to go at sunrise and it was truly a magical experience. Incredible hearing about the history in flight.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta happens every year. It’s considered to be the most photographed event in the world, drawing a huge international crowd of balloonists and spectators every October. Make sure to check this out – definitely not an experience to miss!

Local: Rail Yard Market

So happy to have been in town when the Rail Yard Market was going! It was one of my favorite experiences in the city. Heard about the historic location in the Blacksmith Shop, located in the heart of the city through the locals. The market prides itself in celebrating all things local and at the heart of New Mexican culture.

Favorite find: The Burque Bakehouse
