Last Autumn I had the incredible privilege of taking a last minute vacation, adventuring to one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Copenhagen Denmark. I decided to take the trip within 3 weeks, from day 1 of my decision to the day my flight would take me overseas (side note, I highly recommend this to everyone, to do this at least at once in your life! It’s incredibly adventurous- good for the soul ). I couldn’t help but pull together a handful of my favorite images showcasing the beautiful landscapes, shops, cafe’s, waterfront images and more and make it into a city guide for your own future travel reference! If you haven’t any plans to visit this side of the world, I hope that this post will tempt you to up this on your must see list. You won’t regret it, that’s for certain.

In looking back through the photo collection, I find that I am still in awe of the fact that I actually was able to go. Do you ever have moments in life like that, where you look back after some time and still find it hard to believe that you were able to experience that moment, that time and place? Big or small, we all have moments in life like these, and I’m learning that they can come when we least expect them.

I ventured with sweet Rene Humphrey during my time staying with her in Malmö, Sweden. Huge thanks to her for such a lovely visit to her country and also for being a stunning model for me, seen here! She took me over the bridge into Copenhagen and we explored all the best places in the short but sweet time we had together, and was the best tour guide one could ask for.

Since coming home, I knew I wanted something printed and so I partnered with Artifact Uprising and ordered a large gallery frame of one of my most treasured images from the famous Nyhavn Harbor in Copenhagen. Artifact has been my go to source for printing my work and every time I’m always so impressed! I love the high-end quality they provide and the timeless look of their products. Pictured is a 20×30 black gallery frame with a 26.5×16.5 mat.

You too can secure your own print with this discount code PFAU10 !

Code is valid for one week from this post release, March 21st, for 10% off a product from artifactuprising.com and their iPhone app

My first morning in Copenhagen was spent with sweet Renee Kemps for breakfast at Mirabelle where we had the best croissant of my life. Seriously, so good. From there we went to the Round Tower – it’s just crazy beautiful. It’s a 17th century tower and is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe, providing stunning views of the city. Walking to the top was a dream, as I’d previously seen other photographers around the world posting of their time there. Was one of those surreal moments!

Next to the base of the tower was a beautiful cathedral – I never did catch the name, but it was one of the most beautiful churches I’ve ever seen. I had hoped to see more churches whilst in Denmark and Sweden, but we ran out of time during my short time.

Of course coffee was a must, so we hit up the cities best, The Coffee Collective . I grabbed a bag of freshly roasted Ethiopian beans to take back home, and still to this day is some of the best coffee I’ve ever had… definitely should have grabbed two.

One of my favorite places that I kept going back to was Atelier September – a beautiful bistro serving stunning Scandinavian dishes. The space, the food, the presentation of each plated dish… I basically kept coming back to order more so I could see each vibrant menu item, waiting to steal a window seat for the best shooting light. This is where I fell in love with the Scandinavian food culture! I hope to learn more about it and bring you some inspired recipes to the blog in the future.Copenhagen, Denmark | Photography by Christiann Koepke of PortlandFreshPhoto.com-24

Back in Malmö where I stayed with Rene, we stopped into a little cafe outside her flat called Atrium Cafe’ . This was actually the first experience I had with a non – English speaking culture and I was to say the least, in my happy place walking into this beautiful shop. Something that kept standing out to me in Sweden and Denmark was the detail spent on their beautiful architecture, design, and food and drink culture. It was on a level I’d never experienced before and was incredibly inspirational.

If you’re planning on adventuring in the near future, make sure to consider Sweden and Denmark! You won’t be disappointed, and the proof here is in the beautiful imagery. I hope you’ve enjoyed a little insight in my travels and I hope to bring more to you in the form of city guides as a reference for travels of your own.

All the places I’ve visited and recommended from this trip are noted here in list form for easy reference. I’ve also included a few more suggestions, and make sure to follow Rene’s Instagram for ongoing inspiration in the city!
